Before I start working, I try to get to know the space and understand it better. I ask myself what is the essence of it? What is it all around? In which country and city it is located, on which street, why it was built and who designed it. Thus, I perceive space more voluminously, I begin to feel and see its special beauty. This creates invisible paths that help me feel what needs to be done next, what will be right and what should happen now, so that the breath of life reappears in it.
Based on many years of experience working with space as an art director and curator of contemporary art exhibitions, I transferred the basic principles to the field of design. The apartment with which it all began is located in the old fund. The house was built in 1903-04 by the architect Mulkhanov and is an architectural monument. This forced me to make many non-trivial technical and visual decisions, which later helped to preserve the heritage and emphasized its uniqueness with modern architectural solutions.

I like irregularities and roughness, fluttering colors and small cracks, I like to observe their wonderful imperfection, because it is in them that a genuine sense of life and poetry is concentrated. Of course, they should not be everywhere, but they create the feeling of beauty and naturalness. But no less than natural materials and antiquity, I love modern technological textures and solutions, right angles and perfect lines. They allow you to feel the time, give energy and a sense of today. I like it when they combine, have a dialogue, invariably enhancing each other’s value.

To create bathrooms and a shower I had to use part of the space of the historical corridor. The design of the white cubes allows you to preserve the original geometry of the ceilings, enhancing the contrast of stucco moldings, historic doors and straight lines of new designs. I like it when minimalistic forms are combined with the historical texture of ornate lines and colors. Thus, emphasizing each other, they begin to exist harmoniously, allowing you to reorient the purpose of spaces.

Built-in new high doors are painted in the color of the walls and free the corridor and room from unnecessary details. One of the cubes of new designs is built in the direction of the bedroom, which made it possible to make a shower in the bathroom and separate the bedroom with a full door, which finally made the apartment functional, preserving the geometry of the ceiling and the stove.

Textiles creates a sense of warmth. It was important for me to use simple natural fabrics. Subtle color fluctuations look exquisite.

The nursery is designed for two girls, so I was delighted when it was in this room that we discovered an old stucco under a layer of old paint and rust. Now the ceiling looks even more picturesque and fabulous.

When choosing a color for the walls and the stove, I started from the picturesque tone of the ceiling. I wanted to create a sense of harmony and originality of space.

Minimalist white furniture, square shelves in the form of combined cubes continue the idea of combining modern and historical. So architectural and design decisions become one and work reinforcing each other.

In space, each line, volume, color is connected with each other, therefore, along with other solutions, a simple white cabinet begins to resemble at first glance, more like a suprematist figure than a usual everyday thing.

Since the area of the bathrooms is tiny, complex and irregular in shape, it was important to think through every centimeter well. All elements are built-in and minimalistic. Geometry of the lines allows each centimeter to be used to the maximum, harmoniously continuing the idea of new designs. In order to maximize free space in both bathrooms and maintain functionality, cabinets were designed in which sinks are built in, and everything necessary for daily use is stored in drawers. I also thought over the inconspicuous cabinet built into the wall, which opens when pressed. It is so spacious that it allows you to completely solve all the tasks associated with storage. Sour light creates an atmosphere and a sense of continued space, carefully emphasizing the liveliness of the lines and colors of the textured wall. Moisture-proof even coating with paint and a coarse fixed layer of concrete on the floor continue the general line of visual solutions.
